Audience: To me audience is defined by whom the content or “genre”, is being created for. Audience is important because it allows content to be catered directly for a specific demographic. Which is important cause it can help inspire and create a source to write from. It allows you take content and directly effect the lives of whom it is for. Examples would be creating a story about your culture and being forced to assimilate to another one for conformity. Without Audience, the text would be too general and unable to be applied to any specific source, leaving too many variables and open ended questions. Audience allows you to “tie up loose ends” if you will. Looking at audience this way allows me to recognize Anzaldua’s text because it makes it clearer that the text is being made for minorities who are forced to conform to a white America simply to be “Accepted” (and I use accepted loosely). But with that it also allows the subjectivity that Bazerman uses for his definition of Genre. While Anzaldua’s text is CLEARLY made for other minorities dealing with conforming to a white culture, it could also be seen as a way for white America to be forced to “Watch their privilege”. Wilcha complicated audience by introducing a first person viewpoint into the world of the white man. It was simply a self diary that was meant to show his day to day in the facility and provide a less relatable context to minorities but more so to the privileged of America. Unlike Anzaldua’s text which is made to be a relatable “guide” into navigating a white mans world for minorities, this simply showed the difficulties he himself dealt with in the same world. An outside view vs an inside view. I can’t really say Anzaldua’s text introduced any ideas about Audience that I hadn’t already previously considered. I feel as if she touches on everything that I considered audience to be, therefore, I do not believe my view has changed.
Tyler-
I agree with your view on audience. When you said “without audience, the text would be too general and unable to be applied to any specific source, leaving too many variables and open ended questions”, I thought that was a really good way to explain one view of the importance of audience. I also agree with what you stated about Anzaldua’s main audience and although it seems like its directly for minorities in white America, that the majority could also see it as a reality check.

Tyler, your perspective of audience is interesting. I think it’s also worth noting that while works are created for a primary intended audience, any individual could find themselves being an audience to works that wasn’t intended for them, but they otherwise still enjoy. Case and point: bronies. Was “My Little pony” intended for single, lonely, post-pubescent men? Probably not. That’s probably one of the trickier things to think about when creating something: does my work present itself well to who I intend it for?
As for her writing, I think it’s more of an expression of self identity. I think its not so much about integrating into a privileged man’s america, as she doesn’t even bring that up. She he does, though, experience opposition from people within her own community regarding her use of mixed dialects. So I think it’s less about race so much as it is about language.

Really well written blog, I can see there is a lot of understanding and analyzing the article and really thought about it. What I really agree with him is that audience is so important that If you picked the wrong audience the article might be a failure.

This blog is well written and has good length. You said that “audience is defined by whom the content or “genre”, is being created for”. I also agree that audience and genre are closely related and impact each other. Your perspective on the audience was also very interesting.

Tyler your interpretation of anzalduas piece is very compelling. You look at it tactically from 2 different viewpoints which i am not used to experiencing things but i do believe it is apparent in our world, but that it doesn’t affect me. you also dive into it going too far which sometimes I think in society we do that so it’s always good to have a check and balance on either side no matter the audience.
